Hook-a-Barra Fishing Experience

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a total legend, Hook-a-Barra invites you to test and hone your skills and land fish up to and over one metre.   You might even make it onto our Brag Board!

We’ve got heaps of Barra including rare Speckled and Albino Barramundi (landed one of those yet?), plus some monster Mangrove Jacks with a record weighing in at 7.7kg.

Kick it off with our one-hour catch and release sessions – including all equipment, tackle, bait and tuition – and add extra hours if you like.

For non-fishing guests we offer a general admission fee with displays and special Barra viewing tanks, picnic area and full use of all facilities.

Our Fish

Our Barramundi are wild creatures, and we can’t train them to jump on your hook. They behave exactly like river specimens and the time of day, position of the moon, weather and any number of other factors affect their desire to chase the lure.

So your technique is very important and anglers won’t be disappointed with their fight.

Our ponds are multi-species and filled with salt water sourced directly from the Daintree River. We have over 1500 fish in our Big Barra Pond and you’ll be amazed at the variety of colours and markings, including Albino and Speckled Barramundi.

Whatever you catch, these fish are Champions! We’ve won 20 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the prestigious Sydney Royal Find Food Show over the last 10 years including 12 Golds and 5 Championships.

Take your catch home for $14 per kilo, or ask us about some delicious fresh fillets and some recipe cards.

Everything is provided. Hook-a-Barra has a huge range of quality gear, including a specialist selection of lures with everything from hard bodied minnows to soft plastics, poppers and paddle tails, and a fly-fishing option for expert anglers.

Our passionate and knowledgeable staff provide guidance and tuition on all our equipment. And if you’re sceptical about fishing in a pond, we challenge you to try out some new gear and feel the fight in these magnificent fish.

There are just two golden rules:

  1. We cannot allow personal rods and tackle to be used in our ponds because they create a bio-security risk to our entire farm.
  2. We don’t allow treble hooks and use only single, barbless hooks to protect our fish from needless injury.

We’re sure you’re up to the challenge, but if you have any questions feel free to ask our friendly staff.
